Nvidia has reportedly agreed to acquire open-source AI repository Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, placing the world’s largest open-model hub under the ownership of its largest GPU maker. The deal would concentrate the entire open-source AI pipeline from silicon to distribution inside one company. Nvidia reported record quarterly revenue of $96.2 billion with doubled year-over-year sales and disclosed $366 billion in future commitments. Combining hardware and distribution platform would give Nvidia a structural advantage over purely closed competitors. The acquisition comes as Chinese AI labs like Z.ai and Alibaba’s Qwen release competitive open models that threaten the dominance of leading U.S. labs.
