Tech industry develops data center counteroffensive as $130B in projects face local resistance

At least 75 data center projects representing roughly $130 billion in investment have been blocked or delayed due to local community opposition in the United States and Europe. Major hyperscalers including Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta are responding by developing their own onsite power generation, primarily through gas turbines and battery storage systems, rather than relying on local power grids. Microsoft is also exploring nuclear partnerships for carbon-free baseload power. Companies have signed the Ratepayer Protection Pledge committing to cover power infrastructure upgrade costs instead of passing expenses to consumers. Planned capital expenditures for 2026 range between $630 billion and $785 billion.
