Meta reached a settlement with 51 state attorneys general for up to 18 billion dollars over the next decade, resolving lawsuits that accused the company of designing its platforms to addict children. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torres said this nationwide settlement does not go as far as the protections his state already secured in court, including a direct ban on romantic and sexualized AI chatbot interactions with minors. In March, a Santa Fe jury found Meta liable for 75,000 violations of the state’s consumer protection law and ordered it to pay 375 million dollars in civil penalties, and a judge added another 567 million dollars in August, bringing New Mexico’s total to approximately 942 million dollars. Despite this, New Mexico joined the national settlement. The agreement includes a default two-hour daily time limit, a nighttime block between midnight and 6 a.m., muted notifications during school hours, hidden like counts, and an independent auditor for five years.
