Google pays $10M for Spirit Airlines’ corporate data trove in bankruptcy auction

Google won a bankruptcy auction to acquire Spirit Airlines’ corporate data for $10 million, outbidding AI-focused firm Mercor which had offered $7.5 million. The dataset includes roughly 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams chats, along with spreadsheets, calendars, marketing materials, operational records and pricing data spanning approximately 34 years of business history. The budget carrier filed for Chapter 11 in August 2025 and ceased all operations in May 2026. Google plans to use this data to train its AI models and improve its products, under an agreement that includes scrubbing personally identifiable information through a third-party service before transfer.
