Shipyard winds down IPFS work after Protocol Labs ends funding

Share

Shipyard, an engineering collective maintaining the InterPlanetary File System protocol, will cease operations on Sept. 30 after Protocol Labs declined to renew its funding. This decision leaves several major projects (Kubo, Helia, Boxo, Rainbow, IPFS Desktop, IPFS Companion) without dedicated maintainers. Public infrastructure including ipfs.io, dweb.link and IPFS bootstrap nodes will also be affected. Protocol Labs, which owns the domains and infrastructure, plans to shift to lighter-weight stewardship through individual grants to maintainers. IPFS itself is not shutting down, but many popular implementations and services will need new maintainers.
