Canada suspends trade talks with US, matches tariffs dollar for dollar

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on August 21 that Canada was suspending bilateral trade talks with the United States and recalling its negotiators to Ottawa. The decision came after last-minute changes to US demands that Ottawa described as unfair and unreliable. The United States threatened to impose a 50% tariff on roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian imports, prompting Canada to commit to matching every US tariff dollar for dollar. Negotiations had resumed in 2026 following a previous collapse in October 2025, but trade tensions between the two countries have persisted since early 2025. Canada and the United States trade approximately $900 billion in goods and services annually.
