Premier League chief criticizes FIFA for World Cup plan failures

Richard Masters, chief executive of the Premier League, has strongly criticized FIFA for its abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise plan, which aimed to create a new entity to manage commercial rights for major competitions and sell a 21% stake to private investors. Facing fierce opposition from UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation, which threatened to boycott FIFA events entirely, the project was abandoned. Masters called the failure a self-inflicted wound, and the English Football Association withdrew its support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election bid as he seeks a fourth term in March 2027. The 2026 World Cup, which concluded in July, was won by Spain.
