Facing fierce opposition from UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation, which threatened to boycott FIFA events entirely, the project was abandoned. Masters called the failure a self-inflicted wound, and the English Football Association withdrew its support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election bid as he seeks a fourth term in March 2027. The 2026 World Cup, which concluded in July, was won by Spain.
