Nokia is shutting down almost all of its operations on mainland China before December 31. This strategic decision affects approximately 7,200 employees in the Greater China region, including roughly 1,600 jobs at the Hangzhou R&D facility alone. The company’s revenues in that area have plummeted by more than 58%, falling from approximately 2.2 billion euros in 2018 to 913 million euros in 2025. Nokia’s market share in China now stands below 3%. This restructuring is part of a 350 million euro program made possible by Nokia’s full ownership of the Nokia Shanghai Bell joint venture. The rapid expansion of domestic competitors Huawei and ZTE in 5G infrastructure contracts has made meaningful competition for foreign vendors essentially impossible.
