Ethereum explores UTXO-style model as storage demands grow — Can it scale more efficiently?

Share

Ethereum is exploring a lighter storage model inspired by Bitcoin’s Utreexo system to address exponential growth in network data. Full execution nodes currently require between 0.9 and 1.3 terabytes of storage, with baseline state growth potentially reaching 100 gigabytes annually. According to Vitalik Buterin, this approach could reduce node storage requirements by nearly 99.8%, dropping from 11 to 11.5 gigabytes to under 1 kilobyte. Approximately 80% to 82% of data stored on Ethereum consists of new permanent records, while less than 4% of account and storage records are accessed within a 30-day period.
