Iran is reportedly weighing whether to let European nations help remove naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz. Between ten and twelve devices were laid during escalating tensions earlier this year. A memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran reportedly gives Tehran a thirty-day window to clear the mines and restore normal shipping operations. The strait, roughly twenty-one miles wide at its narrowest point, carries about a fifth of all seaborne oil traffic. The UK Royal Navy and French naval assets operate mine-hunting drones that could accelerate the reopening of this critical oil chokepoint.
