The Federal Trade Commission is reportedly investigating YouTube’s practices around blocking and terminating user accounts, adding to the platform’s growing regulatory headaches. This comes after a landmark FTC settlement in 2019, when YouTube paid a 136 million dollar civil penalty for violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The platform has also taken sweeping action against hundreds of thousands of suspected underage accounts in Australia following new social media laws that took effect on December 10, 2025. YouTube has additionally restored accounts that had been removed under policies related to Covid-19 misinformation and election integrity content.
