Garry Tan, president and CEO of Y Combinator, estimates spending between $100,000 and $200,000 a year on AI tokens, the usage credits charged when developers run models through tools such as Claude Code. He uses agents across numerous projects and coding tasks and has promoted an approach called “tokenmaxxing,” which focuses on increasing AI usage to boost the output of a team. Tan open-sourced on GitHub a toolkit of 23 Claude Code skills called gstack, which has gathered between 100,000 and 136,000 stars. As an example of the returns, he built the blogging platform Garry’s List in about five days for approximately $200 in tokens, while his six-figure annual budget implies a much larger volume of experiments and automated tasks.
