Why ‘equal weight’ S&P 500 funds are having a moment—and are up almost 16% this year alone

The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) gained 15.95% year to date through August 26, outperforming the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) at 12.37% by nearly 3.58 percentage points. The fund crossed $100 billion in assets under management for the first time on August 19, drawing more than $12 billion in net inflows in 2026 alone. Unlike market-cap-weighted funds, RSP assigns roughly equal weight to each of the 500 companies, reducing the influence of giants like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Apple, which have underperformed this year. As of August 25, the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index held only 17% in technology versus 38% for the standard S&P 500, explaining its greater resilience.
