Ronald Spektor, 23, from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, was sentenced on September 23, 2026, to four to twelve years in prison for orchestrating a phishing scam targeting Coinbase users. The young man stole approximately $15.9 million from about 100 victims by impersonating a platform representative and tricking users into transferring their cryptocurrency to wallets he controlled. Although prosecutors had sought a seven to twenty-one year sentence, the guilty plea agreement resulted in a reduced term covering charges of first-degree grand larceny, money laundering and criminal possession of stolen property. Investigators seized roughly $105,000 in cash and $400,000 in cryptocurrency, with the funds having passed through swapping services, mixing services and online gambling platforms.
