Volvo, the Chinese-owned Swedish automaker, plans to launch hands-free point-to-point driving by 2030 based on Nvidia’s autonomous driving technology. The Level 2++ system will handle complex urban environments including traffic lights, stop signs, and unprotected left turns without explicit driver input. This puts Volvo on a collision course with Tesla Full Self-Driving and Mercedes-Benz, while the EX90 SUV already uses Nvidia’s DRIVE Orin chip with a planned transition to DRIVE Thor reaching up to 1,000 TOPS by decade’s end. Regulations governing hands-free driving vary by region and will shape where and how such a Level 2++ city system can actually be deployed.
