Vitalik Buterin now confident AI won’t break crypto, betting 90% of his net worth

Vitalik Buterin has rejected predictions that artificial intelligence could trigger a 50% Bitcoin crash within two years, arguing that most AI-driven security failures should remain fixable and that defenders will benefit from the same technological advances as attackers. Silicon Valley investor Liron Shapiro had assigned a 50% probability to Bitcoin falling more than 50% over the next two years, claiming that AI attacks could damage investor confidence in the network’s security guarantees without breaking its underlying cryptography. Buterin noted that his existing crypto holdings already amount to effectively making that bet with roughly 90% of his net worth. AI-assisted exploits have already pressured crypto services, including Bitcoin swap provider Boltz, which indefinitely suspended its service after months of automated probing moved faster than its team could patch vulnerabilities. More than 100 organizations, including Google, Microsoft, Anthropic and OpenAI, have signed an open letter warning that AI-enabled cyberattacks are likely to become substantially more widespread and sophisticated within months.
