USA Today Co. and 19 affiliated publications have sued OpenAI in federal court in the Southern District of New York seeking more than $250 million in damages. The plaintiffs allege the company copied hundreds of thousands of their articles without authorization, with over 160,000 found in the WebText and C4 training datasets used to build GPT models. Approximately 83,266 of those articles came from usatoday.com alone. The plaintiffs are also seeking injunctive relief to stop the alleged copying. This lawsuit adds to a growing list of publishers suing OpenAI, including the New York Times case which has been consolidated into multidistrict litigation in the same court.
