US Opens a New Front Against Iran’s Crypto Economy

The U.S. Treasury Department placed Iran’s digital asset sector under the same sanctions authority used against its oil, banking and metals industries. This move, part of Operation Economic Outcast or economic D-Day, allows OFAC to sanction any person worldwide facilitating transactions linked to Iran’s crypto sector. Three members of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security accused of hacking U.S. critical infrastructure were designated, with their bitcoin addresses added to the sanctions list and their wallets published. The U.S. also froze cryptocurrency linked to the Iranian regime, mostly in the form of the Tether stablecoin (USDT).
