US midterm elections raise stakes for AI-related stocks as regulation stalls

The US Congress is very unlikely to pass any AI safety legislation before the November elections. The semiconductor SOX index has dropped nearly 6%, down about 24% from its June peak. Several bipartisan AI safety bills, including the Frontier Act and the AI Kill Switch Act, remain stalled in the legislative process without clearing the procedural hurdles required to become law. Senators John Thune, Amy Klobuchar and Ted Cruz have failed to advance any legislation. This regulatory uncertainty compounds growing concerns about AI data center energy consumption, weighing on sector valuations.
