US midterm election poses political risk to AI infrastructure trade

Bipartisan opposition to AI data centers is gaining momentum in the United States, threatening what Wall Street once considered a sure bet. Between 57% and 71% of Americans now oppose new local data center construction, and at least 75 projects worth approximately $130 billion were delayed or canceled in Q1 2026. The governors of New York and Texas have imposed moratoriums on new projects, worsening bottlenecks in the physical infrastructure needed to run AI at scale. Barclays warned that election-related political risks to AI infrastructure are significantly underestimated by investors.
