The US government’s Bitcoin holdings have declined by approximately 1,635 BTC in 2026, leaving an estimated 328,372 BTC as of early October. Around 17,733 BTC were transferred to Coinbase Prime in early October, with no confirmed sales, suggesting a custody reorganization rather than a liquidation. The holdings are valued between $26 billion and $28 billion at current prices, down from a peak of approximately $40.7 billion in late 2025, a $16 billion decline driven primarily by Bitcoin price movements. These holdings originate entirely from law enforcement seizures, including roughly 94,643 BTC from the 2016 Bitfinex hack and about 127,271 BTC from Silk Road recoveries. Executive Order 14233, signed in March 2025, established the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and prohibited sales of seized assets.
