US auto safety regulators open investigation into 1.2 million Tesla vehicles over suspension failures

US auto safety regulators opened an investigation on July 31 into approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles over reports that a key suspension component can detach. The probe covers certain Model 3 sedans (2018-2020) and Model Y SUVs (2021-2023). NHTSA has logged 156 owner complaints about potential detachment of the front lower lateral link, a critical suspension component that helps keep wheels aligned and the vehicle steerable. If it detaches, drivers can lose directional control of the vehicle. No crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been reported so far, though Tesla previously recalled about 2,800 Model 3 vehicles in 2021 and 422 vehicles in 2023 for similar issues.
