The UK’s National Crime Agency has frozen $13.6 million (£10,024,041.33) held in a Premier League bank account as part of an investigation into Sorare, the crypto fantasy soccer card game. The funds were the first instalment of a four-year sponsorship deal announced in January 2023 and reportedly worth around $41 million (£30 million) per year, or $163 million (£120 million) over the full term. The freeze order was obtained from Westminster magistrates’ court in January 2025 under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Sorare is separately facing prosecution by the Gambling Commission for allegedly providing facilities for gambling without a licence, with trial set for June 2027. The Premier League, whose latest reserves exceed $2 billion (£1.5 billion), is not accused of any wrongdoing.
