Ukraine sanctioned five companies within Russian group Rusal and nine Russian citizens on August 20-21. These sanctions target aluminum supplies used in Russian military equipment and missile systems manufacturing. Rusal accounts for approximately 9% of global primary aluminum production. Ukraine specifically flagged the Aughinish Alumina refinery in Ireland as part of the supply chain feeding Russian military production. This represents a targeted approach different from the broad Western sanctions packages of 2022-2024.
