At a rally in Pendleton, South Carolina, Donald Trump said he had asked Google Maps to rename the Atlantic Ocean the “Trump Ocean.” According to him, Sundar Pichai declined, explaining that oceans span multiple countries and asking him not to proceed. Google did not confirm the conversation to Fortune. Trump also floated renaming the Pacific the “American Ocean,” even though no part of Europe borders it. For federal use, Trump could direct government agencies to adopt a different name, but the decision would not bind private companies or other countries. Google voluntarily adopted the names Gulf of America and Lake America for U.S. users, while Mexico sued Google over the gulf label and MapQuest retained the original names, gaining popularity after the Lake Ontario renaming order.
