President Donald Trump is asking Congress to add tariffs on Iran to a bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia and Tehran. These duties would have little effect since the United States imported only $1.4 million in goods from Iran in 2025, with 55 percent being artwork and antiques. The Senate voted 86 to 12 on Tuesday to advance the bill, but adding Iran tariffs could torpedo its chances of becoming law. Democrats have denounced Trump’s heavy use of tariffs, while existing U.S. sanctions already prohibit nearly all bilateral trade with Iran.
