Trump Crypto Ethics Dispute Derails Senate Crypto Bill: Is The Whitehouse Still Good for Crypto?

Senate Democrats blocked the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) on Tuesday after twelve Democrats who had contributed to its drafting ultimately voted against it. Their opposition focused heavily on Trump’s personal crypto interests and ethics provisions deemed inadequate. Republicans had included a presidential ethics provision to win Democratic support, but the proposed enforcement structure left oversight with the U.S. Attorney General, effectively allowing the Trump administration to police itself. Several Democratic senators noted that the administration refused to accept any deal that would end the president’s profiteering from digital assets. Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis, a lead author of the bill, attributed the outcome to hostility toward Trump rather than principled objections to the legislation.
