Trump claims deal to cut beef import tariffs to lower prices

President Trump announced on August 21 the temporary suspension of tariffs on 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef for 90 days, allowing prices that the administration says will be 25% below current market prices. This measure aims to address American consumers facing average ground beef prices of approximately $7.12 per pound in July 2026. The US cattle herd has reached its lowest level in 75 years, driven by drought and high feed costs. American ranchers, represented by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, oppose this measure, which they consider harmful to the rebuilding of their herds.
