Token buybacks are booming. But are they good for crypto projects?

Token buybacks are surging across the crypto ecosystem, with Spark acquiring over 143 million SPK through open-market buybacks and Pump.fun aggressively buying and burning PUMP since July 2025. These mechanisms allow protocols to align tokenholders with long-term success while offering tax efficiency compared to traditional dividends. Critics point out that buybacks do not guarantee higher token prices: PUMP remains 50% below its all-time high and UNI has given back half its gains, raising questions about their ability to fix underlying business issues. The debate is intensifying between buyback advocates and those calling for more reinvestment in teams and projects. On the regulatory front, the CLARITY Act of 2025 questions whether tokens should be classified as securities or commodities.
