« They Dug Their Own Grave »: Data Centers in Turmoil in Texas

Texas Governor Greg Abbott suspended new electrical grid connections for a complete audit, affecting between 250 and 300 data center projects. More than 1,800 projects are seeking connection to the Texas grid, representing approximately 474 gigawatts of cumulative demand, while the total installed capacity on the ERCOT grid reaches only 90 gigawatts during peak summer. Donald Trump called this pause an economic error, while Abbott maintains that connecting projects without knowing if the grid can handle the load would mortgage the electricity supply of millions of Texas households. Several local electric cooperatives have already raised their rates this summer in response to the massive energy demand from data centers, each of which consumes the equivalent electrical output of a medium-sized city.
