The annual adjustment to US Social Security benefits (COLA) could reach its highest level in five years. This increase, though seemingly beneficial at first glance, will only represent a maintenance of the real purchasing power of beneficiaries. In reality, benefits will remain stable in inflation-adjusted terms, or may even lose value. Beneficiaries should therefore not celebrate this nominal increase, which will not truly offset the rising cost of living.
