Thailand adopts crypto Travel Rule with self-custodial wallet checks

Thailand has adopted the crypto Travel Rule, requiring digital asset operators to verify ownership or control of self-custodial wallets during transfers. These operators must retain transaction data for at least five years and make it available for regulatory examination upon request. The new rules, issued by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission, will take effect on February 27, 2027, giving crypto businesses nearly six months to develop compliant systems. Pornanong Budsaratragoon, secretary-general of the SEC, stated that the requirements aim to reduce the risk of money laundering and terrorist financing. Thailand joins a global trend, with the Financial Action Task Force estimating that 83% of surveyed jurisdictions had passed Travel Rule legislation by 2026.
