The open-source Tether project, hosted on GitHub in the zackb/tether repository, lets Linux computers running Wayland receive an iPhone’s SMS messages, iMessage conversations, contacts and notifications over Bluetooth. Version 0.2.0, released on August 19, 2026, also adds clipboard synchronization and file transfer between the phone and the computer. To access this data, the computer emulates a Bluetooth accessory already paired with the iPhone using the MAP, PBAP and ANCS profiles, with no additional installation required on the phone. Full functionality requires BlueZ 5.86 or later with experimental features enabled, while updates in November 2026 focus in particular on connection reliability and dual-bond handling. Despite its name, the project is separate from the company behind the USDT stablecoin.
