Tesla’s Cybercab had a rocky first month in Austin. Now comes the hard part: expanding

Share

One month after its commercial launch in Austin on September 3, Tesla has nearly quadrupled the number of authorized Cybercab autonomous vehicles in Texas, growing from 45 to 169. The Robotaxi service received mixed reviews, with wait times sometimes exceeding 45 minutes, incorrect pickup and drop-off locations, and technical issues with butterfly doors and trunks. The company faces an NHTSA investigation into compliance with U.S. federal safety standards, while its stock has declined 18% this year. Waymo, its Alphabet competitor, dominates the market with over 4,000 vehicles in commercial operations in the U.S. and 500,000 paid rides completed weekly. Tesla now plans to expand to San Antonio, Dallas, Nevada and Florida to fulfill Elon Musk’s ambition of making robotaxis a core pillar of its strategy.
