A 22-year-old video game developer living in Saint-Juéry near Albi, in the Tarn region of France, was targeted in a crypto extortion attempt in early September. Two hooded and gloved individuals broke into his home at 3 a.m., struck him, and threatened him with a firearm to obtain access to his crypto wallet. The victim handed over his smartphone, which the attackers unlocked using facial recognition, but the cryptocurrencies were not stored there. The young man then grabbed a tear gas canister from a dresser and deployed it, causing his attackers to flee. A similar incident occurred days later at a family member’s home, fueling his fears that the criminals may return to “finish the job”.
