Ledger wallet implant exposes a gap in its authenticity check

Share

Ledger confirmed the discovery of an unauthorized hardware implant in one affected customer’s wallet. The investigation began after customers reported losing cryptocurrency after purchasing Ledger devices from CryptoBilis, an authorized reseller based in Southeast Asia that has suspended all hardware wallet inventory sales. Tibane Labs documented three generations of implants designed to intercept 24-word recovery phrases and transmit them via cellular modems. Independent estimates indicate approximately $93.2 million in suspected thefts across 315 wallets on six blockchains. Ledger’s Genuine Check verifies the secure element’s authenticity but cannot detect unauthorized physical modifications. Bitquery also identified a coordinated withdrawal of approximately $29 million in USDT from 25 Tron wallets within three seconds.
