Dowson Tong, CEO of Tencent Cloud and Smart Industries Group, wants to shift Tencent’s AI strategy toward business-specific applications rather than a race to build the biggest foundational model. He advocates a multi-model approach on Tencent Cloud, allowing customers to choose among several models, and a focus on concrete use cases and strong engineering execution. Tencent’s coding assistant, CodeBuddy, is used by more than 12,000 engineers and generates over 50% of new code while cutting coding time by more than 40%. The proposal follows a December 2025 restructuring that appointed Shunyu Yao as Chief AI Scientist, merged the AI Lab with the Hunyuan team, and may change how investors assess Tencent’s research and development spending.
