Tax on Bitcoin Gains? Dutch Government to Introduce Capital Gains Tax From 2028

The Dutch government announced on June 17, 2025 its intention to introduce a capital gains tax starting from 2028. This reform would replace the current system that taxes bitcoin and digital assets based on an assumed annual yield of 4%, regardless of actual realized gains. Details regarding crypto asset taxation remain unclear: it could begin in 2028 or be delayed until 2030. This initiative falls within the EU DAC8 directive framework, in force since January, which requires crypto exchanges to collect and report user data to national tax authorities. Some European countries such as Germany and Portugal continue to exempt crypto assets held for more than one year or 365 days respectively.
