OpenAI discontinued its Sora AI video-generation app and API as of March 24, 2026. The shutdown also ends a partnership agreement announced three months earlier in which Disney was set to invest $1 billion in OpenAI and license more than 200 characters for use in Sora-generated videos. No funds changed hands before OpenAI decided to shut the app down. OpenAI says it is redirecting resources toward robotics, world simulation and artificial general intelligence research, citing high computing costs as a key reason for the decision. Disney expressed surprise at the timing and described the move as a rug-pull, saying it will now explore other AI options and partnerships.
