Researchers from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have developed an AI capable of running the entire scientific method autonomously. The system, which combines large language models with automated reasoning, tested brewer’s yeast and discovered that aminoadipate protects this organism against formic acid stress, improving growth by approximately 7% per millimolar. This protective effect had gone unnoticed despite extensive prior research on yeast. The tool draws on a knowledge base of approximately 60,000 interconnected relationships and operates in a closed loop: hypothesis, robotic experimentation, result interpretation, then a new iteration. The researchers clarify that the goal is to augment human work, not replace it, with humans retaining responsibility for research directions, interpretations and ethical considerations.
