Sunderland have been drawn against AC Milan in the 2026-2027 Europa League league phase, marking the club’s return to European competition after a 53-year absence. The Black Cats’ last continental appearance was in the 1973-1974 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. This qualification came as a result of their seventh-place finish in the 2025-2026 Premier League season. The draw, held on 28 August 2026 in Monaco, also paired Sunderland with AZ Alkmaar, Dinamo Zagreb, Anderlecht, Jagiellonia Bialystok, Lech Poznań, Levski Sofia, and Torreense. The league phase is scheduled to begin on 16-17 September 2026.
