SpaceX, Tesla and Anthropic may reshape the S&P 500—but not right away

Elon Musk is considering a merger between SpaceX and Tesla that would create a combined company worth a theoretical $3.55 trillion, while Anthropic has filed an S-1 in preparation for an initial public offering. Experts estimate that Anthropic could be valued between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion when it goes public. Neither company would enter the S&P 500 immediately, however, because the index generally applies a 12-month waiting period after an IPO, putting SpaceX’s eligibility under consideration in June 2027 at the earliest. Their inclusion would increase the index’s concentration in companies linked to Elon Musk and artificial intelligence, with the top 10 constituents already accounting for nearly 40% of assets in S&P 500 index funds.
