At the time of Alpenglow’s launch, Solana’s mainnet showed a 6.6-second transaction finality time and throughput of 4,721 transactions per second. The upgrade, described as the biggest change to the protocol since genesis, could reduce latency to 150 milliseconds and make the blockchain competitive with Web2 infrastructure. Solana has already reduced its slot time from 400 to 200 milliseconds, with the fourth stage of the program due for completion in October. Validators will also continue developing Agave 4.5, scheduled for December 2026, which would increase the number of accounts supported by a versioned transaction from 64 to 96. The SOL token gained nearly 3% over 24 hours after declining 42% over the past year.
