Solana activated Alpenglow on its main network, replacing the TowerBFT protocol used since 2020 when block 459,653,000 was validated. Transaction finality has been reduced from 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds. Alpenglow enables validators to exchange their votes directly: if 80% of them oppose a transaction, it is settled immediately. This acceleration could facilitate instant payments, decentralized applications, and institutional operations, but it also raises concerns about the risk of centralization on the network. The protocol, developed by Anza, also paves the way for a proposal from the Firedancer team at Jump Crypto to remove Solana’s per-block compute limit.
