SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son voices concern over AI safety risks

Masayoshi Son, the founder of SoftBank Group, is changing his tune and now warning about AI safety risks as machines become more capable. The Japanese group has committed $65 billion to OpenAI, with that amount expected to be reached by October 2026. SoftBank shares plunged more than 13% on September 14, 2026, after leaders from OpenAI and Anthropic expressed concerns about risks related to frontier AI models. SoftBank also raised $11.1 billion through a junk bond issuance to finance its AI push. This convergence between AI safety and market sensitivity illustrates SoftBank’s increasingly narrow margin for error.
