About six in 10 American adults say they have little or no trust in information from the federal government about the environment, foreign affairs, elections, abortion or immigration, according to an AP-NORC and USA Facts poll. This mistrust has grown since 2024 and now exceeds levels seen at the end of Donald Trump’s first term. Only 34 percent of Americans trust government certifications of election results, down from 40 percent in 2024. The partisan gap in trust has widened significantly, with 61 percent of Democrats having low trust in federal budget information compared with 42 percent of Republicans. As the 2026 midterm elections approach, nearly half of Americans are concerned that the federal government will discredit or manipulate election results.
