SEC signals more crypto proposals after custody rule overhaul

The SEC has proposed a new framework for crypto custody covering registered investment advisers, investment companies, and business development companies. The proposal, announced October 1, 2026, would allow self-custody of crypto assets under limited circumstances and permit state trust companies to serve as custodians. SEC Chair Paul S. Atkins indicated that additional regulatory proposals are on the horizon. The public comment period will last 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. This follows an August 2026 proposal for Regulation Crypto Assets offering fundraising exemptions of up to $5 million over four years.
