Scott Bessent emphasizes need to derisk US-China trade relations

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent outlined a « de-risk, not decouple » strategy during a conference in Brazil regarding China trade relations. The approach proposes creating two bilateral bodies, a Board of Trade and a Board of Investment, to identify non-strategic goods eligible for tariff reductions of approximately $30 billion on each side. China’s global trade surplus stands at approximately $1.2 trillion, making this reduction relatively modest in comparison. US tariffs have reduced the bilateral trade deficit with China by approximately one-third in the first half of 2026, bringing it down to $73.9 billion.
