Sam Bankman-Fried, the former head of cryptocurrency platform FTX now imprisoned for fraud, gave $610,000 in June 2022 to David Lawrence, founder of the British think tank Labour for the Long Term. This donation was made one month before the think tank contributed £30,000 to Labour Defence Secretary Wes Streeting to fund his policy advisor. Lawrence claims the Bankman-Fried money went to UK charities and that the donation to Streeting came from a City investor, which the Telegraph disputes, noting that this investor only began donations in February 2023. Bankman-Fried was sentenced in 2024 to 25 years in prison for misappropriating billions of dollars in customer funds deposited on his platform.
