Sam Altman says OpenAI aims to use robots to build its data centers

Sam Altman said OpenAI is developing robots controlled by artificial intelligence to build data centers and their components, with the long-term goal of enabling autonomous replication of these facilities. The company is also preparing a humanoid robot, with a demonstration planned for 2027, in which the intelligence of OpenAI’s models will play a central role. Revived in 2025, the company’s robotics program is based in a San Francisco lab that has quadrupled in size and employs around 100 data collectors, while a second lab is planned in Richmond, California. OpenAI is also recruiting specialists in actuators, sensors, and control systems. This strategy accompanies its investments in Stargate and its partnership with Foxconn to design and manufacture hardware for AI data centers. The robots’ actual ability to construct these facilities and replicate themselves nevertheless remains to be demonstrated.
